Why the context matters
A good handover helps the next person answer three questions: which livestock, what has changed, and what still needs checking?
Make the working record easy to identify
Agree which mob or lot the handover refers to. Keep its identity, current head count, relevant dates and the person responsible for the next step together. If a detail is uncertain, name the uncertainty rather than carrying it forward as fact.
Keep different kinds of information distinct
A business record, a producer declaration and a confirmed external record have different roles. ISC describes NLIS as an identification and traceability system using animal identification, Property Identification Codes and database records. Its NVD guidance explains the declaration’s role in communicating livestock food-safety information.

Link to the authoritative source
Keep references to the relevant documents where the people doing the work can find them. For current NVD, eNVD or NLIS requirements and procedures, use ISC’s official guidance. A note in a commercial workspace is not evidence that an official movement record has been completed.
Leave a useful next action
- Identify the livestock and current record
- Name the source and date of each important detail
- Mark outstanding information clearly
- Identify who will check it and what happens next
- Keep the previous context accessible
